On September 17, 2023, a distinguished chapter in the history of the Ghana Police Service came to a close as Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah bid farewell to his illustrious career spanning over three decades. COP Alex Mensah, an iconic figure in the service, marked his retirement with a wealth of experience and a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

Throughout his remarkable journey, COP George Alex Mensah held various pivotal positions within the Ghana Police Service, culminating in his role as Director-General of Operations, where he exhibited unwavering dedication to maintaining law and order in the nation.

However, his name became synonymous with an incident that captured the nation’s attention—an alleged leaked tape depicting discussions of a plan to remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP). This tape sparked an investigation by a bipartisan parliamentary ad-hoc committee, putting COP Mensah in the spotlight.

Facing the committee, COP Alex Mensah did not mince words. He criticized the IGP for what he deemed as mismanagement of the service and a stifling of information flow within its ranks. In his candid assessment, he characterized the IGP as the least effective leader he had witnessed during his long tenure in the service.

Despite the controversies that arose, congratulatory messages have poured in for COP George Alex Mensah as he officially retires from the Ghana Police Service. These messages reflect not only his professional accomplishments but also the personal relationships and respect he garnered throughout his career.

One message from Ahanta Apemenyimheneba Kwofie III expressed well-wishes for COP Mensah’s 60th birthday and retirement: “Happy birthday to COP/Mr. George Alex Mensah as he turns 60 years today and officially brings his career in the Ghana Police Service to an end. In these few days, a lot has happened but all these are happening so that the Ghana Police Service will get better. Everything happens for a reason. Enjoy your retirement in good health.”

Another message from Charles Konadu Bruce, who had the privilege of working alongside COP Mensah at the Manhyia Division, conveyed pride and well-wishes: “Happy Birthday sir! Working with you at Manhyia Division was a joy to behold. May God continue to guide your steps as you retire from the service. I have always been proud of you.”

As COP George Alex Mensah (retired) prepares for the next chapter of his life, he is expected to meet with the parliamentary committee probing the leaked tape on October 2, 2023, further emphasizing his commitment to transparency and accountability in the service.

In times of transition and reflection, it is apt to remember the words of James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” COP Mensah’s career, filled with dedication and service to his nation, stands as a testament to the pursuit of good in all its forms.

In celebration of a remarkable career and the beginning of a new chapter, we wish COP George Alex Mensah a heartfelt and well-deserved “Happy 60th Birthday!” May this milestone be filled with blessings and the promise of new adventures in the days ahead.
